The small town of Alhama de Murcia goes back to the times of the Romans, when people from the Roman Empire built a watch tower to control the passage through the Guadalentin Valley. At the beginning of the 1st Century AD, the Romans  constructed a building for thermal - Medicinal   purposes and entertainment, taking   advantage of some natural springs located at the foot of Cerro del Castillo. During the Moslem occupation, these springs were given their current name, Al Hamman, which is Arabic for “the bath or thermal baths”. The Castillo, associated with the emergence of Alhama as a township in the 9th Century, witnessed battles between Christians and Moors in the middle ages.  Today it is this town’s mark of identity.   Undoubtedly, because of its Roman thermal springs, its Arab baths, its castle, churches, century-old stately houses, its gastronomy and its people, Alhama is a corner of the Region of Murcia that must be visited, en route to an enviable  heritage: El  Parque Natural de Sierra Espuna [Sierra Espuna Natural Reserve].
